A Philadelphia Story!
Book Signing with Lori LitchMan
Thurs, Aug 11th 6pm – 730Pm
How well do you know Philadelphia? Find out more about our nation’s first city from Lori Litchman, author of “A Philadelphia Story: Founders and Famous Families from the City of Brotherly Love”.
Lori Litchman is a lifelong Pennsylvanian. She grew up near coal country in the Pocono Mountains before making Philadelphia her home. She writes about Philadelphia, nature and the environment, law, and social and urban issues. When she’s not writing, she is usually teaching English to non-native speakers.
Lori received her MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Goucher College. Her personal essays have been published in Philadelphia Reflections: Stories from the Delaware to the Schuylkill and the online literary magazine, The Fiddleback.
She has worked as a daily newspaper reporter for The Legal Intelligencer and Pennsylvania Law Weekly. While there, she won first place in a statewide writing competition for her article hashing out the details of Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law. She has also published a variety of science and environmental pieces. Her work has appeared in national and local print and online publications.
Thursdays 12pm-8pm + June 9th – Sept 1st
Every Thursday in the summer (June 2nd to Sept 1) Main Street Manayunk will be alive with music, food trucks, artists, and other wonderful fanfare. The Spiral Bookcase is happy to use this weekly event as a chance for us to open our shop to you & fundraise for a local literacy organization.
Please join us – swing by the shop, purchase a coloring book, relax, color, and enjoy the company of our bookish community. BYOB. When we get together, The Spiral Bookcase gives back. 10% of all Thursday Sales (6/9-9/1) and 10% of all coloring book sales will be going to two indispensable Philadelphia literacy organizations.
For the first half of the summer we will be raising funds for the Children’s Literary Intiative. Founded in 1988, Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) is a Philadelphia-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works with pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers to improve instruction so that children can become powerful readers, writers and thinkers. CLI envisions a nation where every child has the power of literacy and the opportunity for a lifetime of success.
CLI partners with community organizations, educators and district leaders to provide teachers and principals with training and coaching in the most effective practices for early literacy instruction, and stocks classrooms with collections of high-quality children’s literature. By focusing on educators’ professional skills that improve over time, CLI helps create a sustainable, school-wide culture of literacy that introduces students to the joys of reading, writing, and life-long learning.
Last school year, CLI worked in 190 schools nationwide – in Chicago, Denver, Passaic, N. J., and Philadelphia, for example – to train and coach more than 1,600 educators and improve the reading achievement of more than 40,000 pre-k- 3rd grade students. In the Philadelphia region alone, CLI is working in over 90 schools (public, private and parochial) during the 2016-2017 school year, while also providing 22 pre-kindergarten and early childhood education centers with professional development and CLI’s Blueprint for Early Literacy pre-kindergarten curriculum.
